Team Grid was lucky enough to swing by the Sunshine Kids Club this week and talk with Executive Director Faelin Klein and Administrative Coordinator Jesse Miles about the services offered by this wonderful organization. “The essence of Sunshine Kids is to provide an environment for kids to be kids!” said Klein, “we are a non-profit and offer services to kids 5-18, with and without disabilities in the Butte County area”. Klein felt a need to start the organization when her own daughter’s disability led to exclusion and misunderstanding from other kids. From this occurrence, Sunshine Kids Club was born, and now these kids in Butte County have an outlet to do their own thing! “They totally have a place to be themselves” says Miles, “and working with the kids is a great experience, it’s really like nothing else”.
It’s nice to know that great people in Chico are addressing the fact that kids can and do have trouble sometimes, and need a place that’s stress free and conducive to growth! Just another reason why Chico is one of a kind
Specifics of the clubs activities include an array of fun stuff for the kids. One event that recently took place was a Movie Making Program, in which the students conceptualized, directed, and filmed their own short movies. Sunshine also offers wheelchair basketball, self-defense courses, teen nights/dances, and much much more!
Again Sunshine Kids Club is non-profit, so they are very proactive in getting donations and grants. In fact, they are currently applying for the “Back Your Block” grant from Nike Shoe Corporation, so show some support and vote for them!
