Chico Air Show

This last weekend, the Chico community was dazzled by flips, loops, spins, twists, and other stunts performed by pilots, skydivers, and aviation enthusiasts. Every year, the Air Show draws a great crowd and everyone has a good time, but this year no expense was spared to give the fans a great show. Performers and attendees included a rare Japanese Zero fighter plane (one of only three in the word), a “Flying Fortress” B17 Fighter, a large Air Force C-17 cargo plane, multiple helicopters and other stunt planes, and masses of excited onlookers.

Fortunately, Team Grid was able to set aside some time with Southern California Stunt Pilot Dr. Frank “D” Donnelly, and get the scoop on the Air Show and the flying itself. “Chico’s always such a great show” says Dr. D, “and I’m extremely happy to be back”. Initially Dr. D’s psychology background and mild temperament would lead you to believe he leads a normal life, but when he is looping and spinning his 1946 Taylorcraft with the engine OFF, you begin to think otherwise. Upon being called “insane”, Dr. D coolly replies “I’m a psychologist, what’d you expect?”.

Donnelly was kind enough to give us a tour of his plane which has been altered to have more horsepower and less weight, making it an ideal performance machine. The theme of Dr. D’s show is aimed at replicating the maneuvers and tricks done in the early days of stunt flying, and he does things with the vintage plane that defy logic. In fact, the entire second half of Franks performance included him cutting the engine, and performing loops, turns, and landing with zero power.

Aside from the amazing acts performed by Donnelly and other stunt pilots, the show included something for everyone and every face left with a smile. The show served as another great exhibit in which the people of Chico come together and enjoy everything that makes this town unique, and if you missed it, we better see you next year!!!
